FULL MOON
Namaste to all of you,
how are you?
Today I would like to tell you that at the beginning of January Poonam was born, which means full moon. She is the newest member of our NGO family. It’s always a gift to welcome another baby even though for her family it’s not so happy. She was born into a family of extreme poverty and they are not able to adecuatley care for their children. Despite this, they are blessed with a child every year Poonam is the sixth girl and the oldest is only nine years old.
The only wish they have is for a boy and I’m afraid the mother will be pregnant again next year. We spoke with her on various occasions in order to ask her if it´s convinient to have another child given the fact of their extreme poverty. She listens and sometimes she gets emotional but she ignores our advice.
A girl has little value in India, she will have to go and live with relatives and on top of that in order to marry her off they have to pay “the dowry” meaning her family will have to pay for presents like a TV, some furniture or a motorcycle. In other words “it’s an expense that isn’t worth it” and it is an economical burden for the girls family.
For those reasons many women use abortion (it´s not oficial but its estimated that 500.000 woman have an abortion when a girl is expected). What a shame!
I would love to tell you happier stories, but sometimes we need to know about those cruel realities.
Now Poonam is here and, as you can see in the picture, she is divine! We are here in order to give a hand, so she might be able to have a future with dignity.
Thank you and see you later
Christiane
