Our Pinki
Hello everyone,
This month, I’d like to dedicate our newsletter to our dear Pinki. I’ve mentioned her to you before on a few occasions.
Pinki spent 8 years of her life surviving on the streets of Jaipur: mistreated, begging, eating from trash, and without even having a blanket to cover herself at night. Those were incredibly tough conditions. When she turned 8, Childsrights provided her with shelter, food, clothing, education, and above all, lots of love. She was always a child with tremendous strength, without which she wouldn’t have survived. She has a very big heart, is affectionate, cheerful, and very grateful.
One day, when she was around 10 years old, she found out that Childsrights was paying rent for them to live in the orphanage. Shocked, she said to me, “So, do our godparents have to pay rent in addition to financing food and school?” I responded yes, that nobody gives us a house for free. That got her thinking all afternoon, I saw her sitting in a corner flipping through a newspaper. She was very serious, so I asked her what the matter was, and she said, “Listen, at 2 pm I come back from school. I eat, do my homework, and by 5 pm I’m done. I still have the whole afternoon to find a job and pay the rent myself.”
Oh my God, that’s just how she is. She studied law and is currently pursuing a master’s degree. At the same time, she works at a café from the well-known chain “Starbucks”. She started as a waitress and after a year, she was promoted to team leader. She loves working there and also has a good schedule. She earns quite well, and she no longer receives financial assistance from us, but emotionally we remain very close. Starbucks also has a legal department where hopefully Punki can find her place because she studied law. She’s an example of someone who has achieved all the goals of our NGO, “to create a dignified future for underprivileged children,” and I’m very happy with what she’s achieving. Not all children succeed because each one is different and some may not fully take advantage of the opportunities life offers them, but we pray that most will have a good life.
Namaste,
Christiane
