DIGAMBARA ASHRAM, the baby house
Childsrights started their journey in 2007 since then it never stopped growing and our “family” increased from 12 up to 59. Over the next years, the children will reach adulthood and one day, sooner or later, they will be independent. Childsrights has become family for these children and we wish to remain so. Our challenge now is how to support our kids as they enter this next phase of life. Whenever they are in trouble, they should always have a place to come. The solution we came up with was “Digambara Ashram“. Childsrights bought a piece of land only 5 km outside Khajuraho in the countryside, surrounded by mountains, green fields and a very peaceful atmosphere. Childsrights is gathering financing in order to develop a vast project that we named “Digambara Ashram”.
An ashram is a center where you live in harmony and tranquility. Once it´s built, all of the Nane-Home children who live in Khajuraho now and are the smallest of the Childsrights kids in need of most attention will move to the Ashram. The girls and boys living in Jaipur with I-India however will continue living in Jaipur, this way we won´t interrupt their studies. Although they won´t live in the Ashram they will always have a very close relationship with Digambara especially in periods of vacation.
On the other hand, this Ashram will also be a baby house that will shelter 40 orphan girls and boys between the ages of 0-4 years. Many babies in hospitals are orphans or simply left alone in the streets and need to be taken care of.
Digambara Ashram is slowly but surely advancing without stopping. We are in possession of the property and construction plans, you can see in the digital projection of the above image. We will plant an ecological orchard in order to produce the necessary food for the residents and build a hostel in order to receive voluntary workers and guests. We have designed this place always having in mind the privacy and well-being of the children so they won´t be affected by any outside distractions.
Surely you can imagine the vast weight of this project and it´s multiple facets. From here, we would like to call out to every person that would like to contribute as new members and collaborators to this big dream becoming part of the Digambara Community.
In the name of all the children, we would like to Thank you very much!
The location
The Digambara-Ashram (Center of meditation) will be located next to the village Khajuraho with its 20000 habitants. Khajuraho is a district of Madhya Pradesh, one hour flight distance from Agra in the North-east of India. From the airport it is a ten minutes drive to the Ashram. Furthermore you can find a train station in Khajuraho with a daily night-train to Delhi. The erotic temples of Khajuraho a worldwide known. The majority of the neighbours of the ashram are farmers earning their salary with fruits and vegetables or breading animals. The main problems in this area are the high number of unemployment, lack of access to sanitary facilities and clean water and as consequence the high number of child mortality. Another big problem in this region is the high illiteracy rate and the alcoholism especially by men.
The Baby-Home
The Baby-Home will consist of two buildings offering shelter to twenty girls and twenty boys, who have lost their mother during or shortly after the birth. It is of great importance for us to become involved in this matter. If nobody cares for these babies, they will end up in the streets or in orphanages without enough capacity to take individual care about them. In the worst case they will be taken by the mafia for abusing them. The police and local aid organizations will help us with the legal admission of the babies.
The house of culture
The house of culture will serve us as a center for all kinds of activities, like meditation, yoga, theater, dance, music and drawing. All the children and the youth shall develop with joy and peace in this house. Furthermore the Ashram serve as a place for exchange between us and people from our surroundings or visitors from abroad.
The new Nane-Home
The new Nane-Home will be a building for the eleven children from Nane-Home in Khajuraho, separated from the other buildings. Christiane, who is the main responsable for the education of the children and the whole project, will live with their children in this house. Stuff will come daily to care for the household and has its accomodation in the babyhouse. As the actual Nane-Home is located only 5 km away from the project, we consider to move the children to the new place also according to saving of expenses. Our private schoolbus will bring them to their actual english-school.
